Redbreast Irish Whiskey unveils seventh and final release in famed Dream Cask series: Redbreast Dream Cask Zenith Edition A 38-year-old single pot still Irish whiskey honouring tradition and innovation, crafted by Master Blender Dave McCabe and Master Blender Emeritus Billy Leighton.

Redbreast Irish Whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers at its world-renowned Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork, proudly unveils the seventh and final edition of its acclaimed premium Dream Cask collection – Redbreast Dream Cask Zenith Edition. Released to mark World Whisky Day 2024, whiskey enthusiasts will have the exclusive opportunity to purchase this limited-edition, final chapter in the Redbreast Dream Cask Series for an RRP of €1,000 via an online ballot which opens at 12pm GMT on Monday, May 20th.

Bottled at a strength of 45.3% ABV, Redbreast Dream Cask Zenith Edition is the oldest release in the series, aptly named to signify the series reaching its highest point. Distilled in 1985, the whiskey spent 27 years in bourbon casks, before spending the rest of its time in a first-fill Oloroso sherry cask, resulting in a 38-year-old single pot still that boasts American oak ex-bourbon spice and vanilla tones alongside the Oloroso sherry cask’s influence of ripe and juicy blackcurrant with subtle chocolate and nutty undertones.

Aged to perfection by Master Blender Dave McCabe and Master Blender Emeritus Billy Leighton, Redbreast Dream Cask Zenith Edition embraces the art of finely tuning the flavour of whiskey during maturation through the skill of recasking, a method that honours both Redbreast’s heritage and future. This process allows the Master Blenders to carefully craft and unlock such a unique flavour profile, which for this edition, results in an exemplary expression that is truly fitting to culminate such a poignant Redbreast chapter.

Mirroring the collection’s roots as a time-honoured celebration, both the first and last Redbreast Dream Cask editions were distilled in 1985 and share traditional pot still style, typical of Redbreast. While the 2018 inaugural release, bottled at 32 years, ventured into Oloroso Sherry barrels in 2011, the Zenith Edition recasked into sherry casks in 2013 was left to continue to mature until now, creating this 38-year-old masterpiece. The Redbreast Dream Cask collection has been nothing short of historic, evolving from Master Blender Emeritus Billy Leighton’s initial aspiration to bottle something truly exceptional. Through the expertise and dedication of our blenders at Midleton Distillery, each chapter of the Redbreast Dream Cask collection has offered its own unique aroma, flavour and finish that have been enjoyed by Redbreast fans around the world. The final chapter of the collection, Redbreast Dream Cask Zenith Edition, is a fitting tribute to conclude where the collection began, marking the end of a chapter for Leighton and alluding to the exciting future ahead for McCabe’s new role as Master Blender.
Speaking about the launch, Billy Leighton, Master Blender Emeritus, says: “The release of Redbreast Dream Cask Zenith Edition marks a bittersweet moment – the end of a remarkable chapter. This collection has been a labour of love and each edition has been a celebration of the craft and passion that defines Redbreast. Handing over the baton to Dave fills me with pride, knowing that the legacy of exceptional whiskey-making will thrive under his expertise.”

Dave McCabe, Master Blender at Irish Distillers, adds: “As I take on the role of Master Blender, I am both honoured and excited to be part of the legacy forged by Billy. This release represents a grand finale of the Redbreast Dream Cask collection and symbolises the culmination of tradition, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Working alongside Billy has been an honour, and Redbreast Dream Cask Zenith Edition as the final Dream Cask release, acts as the perfect ode to Billy’s passion which inspired the Dream Cask series in the first place.”
Available to purchase at RRP €1,000, exclusively through an online ballot for Redbreast Birdhouse members which opens at 12pm GMT on Monday, May 20th, this release is a rare and fitting conclusion to the historic series, with each bottle presented in a keepsake book, made from recyclable cardboard, detailing the latest instalment in the Dream Cask journey.

Tasting Notes
Nose: A wonderful and rich combination of herbs and spices with notes of menthol, liquorice, rosemary, and allspice. Fruit elements offer aromas of black cherry and blackcurrants with hints of mango and orange peel. Many years of ageing in a combination of seasoned oak casks give an impression of antique furniture, delicate wood resin and linseed.

Taste: Tropical and fleshy fruits intermingle with luscious, smooth waves of vanilla and chocolate. Soft oak tannins eventually shine through, enhancing the pot still spices and showcasing notes of black peppercorns, freshly picked garden mint and a mild ginger spice. The fruits continue to build, working in harmony with the nutty undertones. The influences of Oloroso sherry add further intricacy to this complex whiskey.

Finish: Lingering, with the spices eventually fading, leaving the fruits and oak to have the final word.

MIDLETON VERY RARE, THE PINNACLE OF IRISH WHISKEY,LAUNCHES 2024 VINTAGE

Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman unveils his fourth Midleton Very Rare annual vintage as the brand marks a milestone anniversary

Irish Distillers, maker of some of the world’s most enjoyed Irish whiskeys, is delighted to launch the Midleton Very Rare 2024 Vintage – an extraordinary blend of the finest single pot still and single grain Irish whiskeys, that showcases the mastery of Master Distiller Kevin
O’Gorman.

The 2024 Midleton Very Rare Vintage is rooted in the award-winning Midleton Very Rare profile with a subtle twist of ripe stone and orchard fruit notes. Deliciously well balanced, this latest vintage combines pot still whiskeys with grain whiskeys creating uplifting floral, herbal and scented vanilla notes. Presented in a luxurious recyclable* gift box, this unique bottling, coinciding with the ruby
anniversary of the brand, will be available from 28th February at the RRP of €240, $350.

The legacy of Midleton Very Rare began more than four decades ago, fuelled by the desire of the distillery’s then Master Distiller to create outstanding expressions. Each subsequent Master also began setting aside small quantities of exceptionally performing whiskey to allow
for a new luxury offering in the world of Irish whiskey for years to come. Today, Midleton Very Rare marks 40 years since the release of its first vintage whiskey, and to further
commemorate this landmark year for the brand, the 2024 Vintage will launch alongside the exclusive celebratory Midleton Very Rare 40 th Anniversary Ruby Edition.

Derived from Midleton’s renowned ‘Warehouse A2’, a traditional stone warehouse dating back to the 1860s where only the most exceptional liquid is stored for maturation, O’Gorman and his team handpicked a selection of rare single pot still and single grain whiskeys to create the 2024 Vintage. The whiskeys were matured in a mixture of first fill ex- American whiskey oak barrels and a small number of refill ex-American whiskey oak barrels.

Drawing upon his wealth of experience in both distillation and maturation, O’Gorman has artfully created a whiskey that remains true to the Midleton Very Rare profile, while introducing a subtle yet defining twist for this year’s annual vintage. Including a range of traditional pot still whiskeys, encompassing light, medium and heavier styles, this year’s profile adds an intricate layer of complexity to the liquid, producing delightful hints of ripe apple and sweet pear.
To achieve an exquisite balance of finesse and elegance, the grain element has been subtly increased compared to last year’s vintage, imparting floral, rosewater and herbal notes. The increase in first-fill ex- American whiskey oak barrels contribute vanilla, toasted oak, and sweet notes which compliments and balances the enhanced grain inclusion. Exemplifying the mastery and innovation that has come to define Midleton Very Rare, the 2024 Vintage is
a liquid deliciously well-balanced between distillate character and wood contribution, with an overall taste of tropical fruit notes, crème brûlée, toffee-apple and chocolate dipped honeycomb.

Commenting on Midleton Very Rare 2024 Vintage, O’Gorman states, “While every year the
Master Distiller adds their own unique touch to the final product, the profile and very essence of Midleton Very Rare remains the same. When creating the annual vintage, my aim is to preserve the timeless elegance and finesse of the liquid that has become synonymous with the Midleton Very Rare brand over the last forty years, while introducing my own twist by carefully adjusting elements such as grain and pot still whiskey contributions, as well as cask selections, to unveil new flavours. We believe we have achieved just that with this year’s remarkable annual vintage, which we look forward to sharing with you all.”

Midleton Very Rare 2024 Vintage was bottled at 40% ABV and will be available from 28th February in the USA, Ireland, UK, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Germany, Canada, Australia, France, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Bulgaria, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, The Caribbean, The Netherlands, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Persian Gulf, Northern Ireland, Global Travel Retail and Irish Distillers’ Brand Homes at the RRP of €240, $350.

MIDLETON VERY RARE CELEBRATES 40 TH ANNIVERSARY WITHEXTRAORDINARY LAUNCH OF THE RUBY EDITION

Ruby anniversary bottling has been inspired and crafted by all three of the revered Midleton Master Distillers, Barry Crockett, Brian Nation and Kevin O’Gorman.
To celebrate 40 years of Midleton Very Rare, the pinnacle of Irish whiskey, Irish Distillers is thrilled to launch the Midleton Very Rare 40th Anniversary Ruby Edition. An exquisite blend of single pot still and single grain Irish whiskeys, with an age range spanning four decades and finished in a ruby port cask, only the most exceptional and rarest liquids from the Midleton storehouse have been selected and masterfully married to form this celebratory expression.

This new launch has been masterfully created to combine liquids originally laid down by each of the revered Midleton Master Distillers, Barry Crockett, Brian Nation and Kevin
O’Gorman. These special whiskeys were finally married together and then left to finish in a ruby port cask to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Midleton Very Rare, a milestone often associated with rubies.

In 1984, Barry Crockett set out to craft the most outstanding Irish whiskey ever made with a passion fuelled by the rich distilling history of Midleton. Blending together the finest raw ingredients, the most advanced techniques and a dedicated team of craftspeople, he unveiled the very first Midleton Very Rare release and a legacy was born. Forty years on, to mark this historic occasion, a selection of three exceptional casks from each of the Master
Distillers covering the era of Midleton Very Rare were chosen to create the Midleton Very Rare 40th Anniversary Ruby Edition.

Each of these ultra rare casks, individually filled by each Master in their respective eras, contained a unique blend of the finest pot still and grain distillates dating back to the early 1980s. Bringing each unique liquid together to create an extraordinary blend, O’Gorman gave the whiskey its final and defining touch by finishing the blend in a ruby port cask for nine months, resulting in an exceptionally rare nose, taste and finish. While maintaining the elegance and finesse of the quintessential Midleton Very Rare profile, with floral undertones, notes of orchard fruits and citrus and a hint of sweet vanilla, O’Gorman’s unique twist with
the use of a ruby port cask adds a new layer to the signature style, with rich bursts of blackcurrant, raspberry and plum.

Crockett once likened making fine whiskey to conducting an orchestra, a symphonic masterpiece of skill and passion. This quintessential style is one that has proudly been
upheld by Crockett’s successors, as O’Gorman comments, “As we celebrate four decades since the inaugural launch of Midleton Very Rare, we are excited to create yet another
milestone in Midleton Distillery’s extraordinary history with the launch of Midleton Very Rare 40th Anniversary Ruby Edition. This exquisite release brings influence from all three Master Distillers and not only helps us to preserve the knowledge of Midleton Distillery’s past Masters but builds on it by evolving the art of distillation and maturation with the addition of the ruby port cask. It has been a privilege to play a part in the creation of this pinnacle of Irish Whiskey and I look forward to continuing to evolve the Midleton Very Rare brand.”

Retailing at €20,000, the whiskey is presented in a bespoke crystal decanter that has been hand crafted by Waterford Crystal. Known the world over as the pinnacle of luxury crystal, the bottle was designed and created at their world-famous factory in Ireland, featuring a four-
point crystal to represent the four decades of Midleton Very Rare and is a true masterpiece of craftsmanship. The bottle is then beautifully packaged in a ruby case, all encased in an FSC-certified wooden cabinet, making it the perfect piece of memorabilia.

o mark this historic event, building on the already exquisite packaging for the launch, Irish Distillers has partnered with the renowned Keanes Jewellers in Cork, to create just one
special NFT bottle. Established in 1948, Keanes Jewellers has become synonymous with Cork and fine jewellers in Ireland, offering outstanding craftsmanship and the highest
standards. This unique bottle features hand engraved 18-carat solid gold on both the neck and stopper and thirty-two rubies encrusted within the neck collar, making it a true collector’s item, and a unique piece of art. The 32 rubies are extremely unique in that they are identical
in both quality and style. This bottle includes an official certificate of authenticity from Keanes Jewellers.

Patrick Keane, 3rd generation of the Keane family, commented: “Rubies signify a 40th anniversary and are considered the gem of passion, something that feels so apt with the passion that shines through from the Master Distillers and all those involved in the creation
of Midleton Very Rare. As a business local to the distillery, we were ecstatic to be asked to collaborate with Irish Distillers and took huge care to create something worthy of the Midleton Very Rare Ruby Anniversary Edition. It has been an honour to be involved in such a momentous and historic moment for the brand.”

Midleton Very Rare 40th Anniversary Ruby Edition is bottled at 53.1% ABV and will be available from 28th February in the USA, UK, Ireland, Northern Ireland, UK, Australia, Singapore, Persian Gulf, Hong Kong, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, France,

Irish Distillers supports restoration of iconic former Powers John’s Lane Distillery pot stills on the National College of Art and Design campus

– Irish Distillers has supported the restoration of three iconic pot stills which once played an important role in the history of Irish whiskey.

– The pot stills can be found on the grounds of the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), the former location of the Powers John’s Lane Distillery.

– The restoration project, which included the removal of vegetation and graffiti from the stills and restoration of the brickwork and ironwork, will ensure the distilling history of Powers and the wider Liberties area is preserved for years to come.

– The Thomas Street area historically was part of the ‘Golden Triangle’ of distilling in Dublin, with the Powers John’s Lane Distillery forming one apex.

Dublin, 13th December: Irish Distillers, producer of some of the world’s most well-known and successful Irish whiskeys has supported the refurbishment and preservation of three antique pot stills from the former Powers John’s Lane Distillery. The pot stills, which once produced Powers Irish Whiskey, are now owned by the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) and are located in the heart of the NCAD campus on Thomas Street.
The three unique copper pot stills are the only remaining pot stills still in-situ on the former site of Powers John’s Lane Distillery in the Liberties area of Dublin.

Founded in 1791 by James Power, in its prime, the Powers John’s Lane Distillery had a production of almost 900,000 gallons of Irish whiskey a year, exporting all over the world to distant markets such as Canada, the US, Australia, Uruguay and Egypt from the centre of Dublin city.
Central to the success and prestige of the whiskey was the technological achievements of the distillery. The massive pot stills which were described in 1886 by the writer Alfred Barnard as being “as bright and clean as burnished gold” were designed in house by the distilling team along with the ‘Spirit Safe’ to a unique design. He described the whiskey produced from these stills as “finer than anything we had hitherto tasted”.
The distillery ceased distilling whiskey in 1976 and the former grounds are now home to the National College of Art and Design.
In recognition of the contribution of the distillery and the stills to the history of Irish Whiskey, and in partnership with NCAD, Irish Distillers invested to refurbish and preserve the remaining stills, restoring Dublin’s whiskey production heritage.

The project required specialist contractors from EML Construction Ltd to carry out the work, which took eight months to complete and included abrasive blast cleaning, painting, copper cleaning and lacquering the copper stills, all of which was done by hand. The steps, valves, platforms, and the ovens used to heat the stills were also restored to showcase the workings and intricacies of the production process, all integral to the heritage of the stills. The surrounding areas were also rejuvenated with repairs and cleaning to the surrounding brickwork, railings and landscaping in accordance with consultations and agreements with the Dublin City Council Conservation Architects department.
Commenting on the announcement, Joao Rozario, Global Marketing Director at Irish Distillers said: “Powers John’s Lane Distillery was once a thriving distillery and played a significant role in the history of Irish whiskey. We are honoured to have been able to respectfully restore these iconic pot stills and preserve the heritage of John’s Lane Distillery.”

Carol Quinn, Head of Archives at Irish Distillers said: “These pot stills are landmarks of Irish Whiskey and it’s truly wonderful to have been able to honour their heritage, and that of the Powers family, through this restoration project. We hope the staff and students of NCAD will be able to enjoy the magnificent view of the newly restored pot stills for many years to come.”

Professor Sarah Glennie, Director, the NCAD commented: “The National College of Art and Design campus occupies a unique position in Art and Design Education in Ireland, and for over 200 years it was the location of Powers John’s Lane Distillery. The heritage of the building is evident throughout and forms part of the fabric of the college, but none more so than the iconic pot stills in the heart of the campus. We are incredibly grateful to Irish Distillers for their continued support in the maintenance of the iconic landmarks. The refurbishment work that has been competed has truly transformed the college campus and will continue to serve as a beautiful reminder of our past to our students.”

Charles O’Reilly, descendant of the Powers family, said: “Powers John’s Lane Distillery formed part of the ‘Golden Triangle’ of distilling on the Thomas Street area of Dublin during the 1800s. At its height the distillery set the standard for modernity and progressive work practices. And the iconic pot stills that now sit on the campus of the NCAD were the jewel in the crown of the distillery, so my family and I are delighted to join the team from Irish Distillers and NCAD to celebrate the preservation of a piece of history from an iconic distilling dynasty.”

REDBREAST IRISH WHISKEY UNVEILS FESTIVE FOREST GREEN BIRD FEEDER EDITION OF ITS BELOVED REDBREAST 12 YEAR OLD

Returning for its fourth year, the Irish whiskey’s popular bird feeder edition launches just in time for Christmas, with donations supporting charity partner BirdLife International
Shop:MidletonDistilleryCollection.com
Redbreast Irish Whiskey, the world’s most awarded single pot still Irish whiskey, unveils its highly anticipated fourth edition 12-year-old bird feeder bottle. Dressed in forest green to embrace the festive season and with an unwavering commitment to nurturing a positive future for all birds, Redbreast continues its legacy of crafting exceptional whiskey while championing bird conservation around the globe.

This year’s special edition bottle features an intricately designed green casing that transforms into a bird feeder. While the iconic 12-year-old whiskey dons an alluring forest green robe, reminiscent of the lush habitats that birds call home, it’s more than a bottle; it’s a beacon of hope for our avian companions and signifies a brighter outlook for all birds.

Hoping to match last year’s success, which saw Redbreast raise €70,000 for bird conservation in partnership with BirdLife International, the proceeds generated from the sale of this bottle will continue to actively support the shared mission of the brand and charity: creating a positive future for all birds. One of the best indicator species for the health of the planet, sadly, a decline in bird population is now a more pressing concern than ever with almost half of all bird species experiencing declines, and one in eight teetering on the brink of extinction. These alarming findings underscore the critical importance of continuous support for bird conservation initiatives.
To date Redbreast Irish Whiskey’s support of BirdLife International has benefitted 726 threatened species through conservation efforts including the publishing of over 600 science papers which have influenced global, national and regional policies and conservation actions.
BirdLife International’s 2022 State of The World’s Birds Report can be viewed here

The festive green limited edition bottle will be available in nine markets as part of Redbreast’s partnership with BirdLife International, with an aim to once again raise €70,000 for bird conservation efforts this year.

Patricia Zurita, CEO of BirdLife International, stated: “We are thrilled to join hands once again, united in our mission to safeguard the well-being of birds for generations to come. The limited-edition Redbreast bird feeder bottle serves as a symbol of not only our shared commitment but also our heartfelt support for our feathered friends. With each bottle, we take another step towards a brighter future for these magnificent creatures, ensuring they continue to grace our skies and enrich our lives.”

Billy Leighton, Master Blender at Irish Distillers, commented: “Collaborating with BirdLife International continues to be a genuine pleasure for all of us at Redbreast Irish Whiskey.

“As we embark on the next chapter, we’re thrilled to introduce another edition of our beloved bird feeder bottle, this time adorned in a captivating forest green. We are confident that it will capture the hearts of both whiskey connoisseurs and bird enthusiasts alike, blending the delight of our cherished spirit with a profound dedication to the natural world.

“These bird feeder bottles are about more than just whiskey. They play an essential role in providing vital protection and nourishment to birds, ensuring their well-being, particularly during the colder months. It’s through these feeders, in addition to other efforts such as the support of low impact farming, the provision of nest boxes and the creation of bird habitats at our whiskey production sites, that we can make a positive impact on our environment and the creatures we share it with.”

Redbreast 12-Year-Old, matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, is the ultimate gift for those who appreciate Irish whiskey and a timeless choice for Christmas food pairings. The limited edition bird feeder bottle will be available via MidletonDistilleryCollection.com from 1 November and on select store shelves in USA, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, Canada, China, Germany, Global Travel Retail, Hong Kong, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Slovakia and the USA at RRP €78.

INTRODUCING JAMESON REMIXED CARIBBEAN BEATSFULLY AGED FOR 21 YEARS IN RUM CASKS, THIS EXCEPTIONAL WHISKEY CELEBRATES WHERE THE RHYTHM OF THE CARIBBEAN MEETS THE BEAT OF THE IRISH DRUM

ameson, the world’s bestselling and most awarded Irish whiskey is delighted to presentJameson Remixed Caribbean Beats, an extraordinary 21 year old Irish whiskey aged entirely in rum seasoned casks. Jameson Remixed Caribbean Beats is the newest addition to The Jameson Anthology, and it explores brand new flavours from Jameson for an altogether different take on the classic Irish icon. It follows Jameson 15 Year Old Single Pot Still, which launched last year to celebrate the spirit of classic discontinued whiskeys, as part of the Jameson Anthology.

Representing a truly exceptional interpretation of Jameson Irish Whiskey, Jameson Remixed Caribbean Beats is a blend of single pot still and single grain Irish whiskeys that were initially laid down in rum casks sourced from the Caribbean island of Barbados more than two decades ago. Eighteen years later, Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman was curious to explore how a second style of rum might impact the flavour of the liquid and decided to age the whiskey for a further three years in Selección de Maestros Havana Club rum seasoned casks, which imparted an especially rich rum contribution.

Fully aged for 21 years in the rum seasoned casks, the grain whiskey picked up sweetness in the form of brown sugar and vanilla, while the pot still took on fruit flavours of orange zest and mango. This rare expression retains a clear reference to Jameson’s unmistakably smooth DNA through its balance of grain and pot still whiskeys, yet it is elevated to new heights with its exceptional aging, thanks to the experimental minds of Jameson’s masters and makers at Midleton Distillery.

Presented in recyclable packaging, this unique whiskey offers warming spices and flavours of chocolate dipped honeycomb, citrus and coconut shavings. The grain whiskey’s soft and elegant presence gains additional vibrancy from many years of ageing in rum-seasoned casks, paying homage to Irish, Caribbean and Cuban craftsmanship, while putting a new spin on the world’s most celebrated Irish whiskey.

Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman comments: “Excited by a 2001 trial with Caribbean rum casks, through innovation, careful craft and over two decades of maturation, we worked to marry two traditional spirits together – Irish whiskey and rum – and in doing so, found the sweet spot where the rhythm of the Caribbean meets the beat of the Irish drum. We can’t wait for whiskey enthusiasts to experience Jameson Remixed Caribbean Beats.”

Brewing and Distilling Specialist, Angela Coral Medina adds: “Jameson Remixed Caribbean Beats embodies the craft and quality for which Jameson has always been renowned. Maturation in rum casks creates a delicious and unique flavour that brings together spice, earthiness, and sweetness, while complimenting the traditional fragrant, floral and fruity notes that are synonymous within the much loved Jameson style of whiskey.”

Bottled at an ABV of 46%, Jameson Remixed Caribbean Beats is priced at RRP €280 per 500ml bottle, with a limited quantity of 2,900 bottles available exclusively online via

Tasting notes:

Nose:

Warming spices accompanied by figs, toasted almonds, muscovado sugar, and coconut shavings. The pot still spices are accentuated by the rum seasoned oak adding notes of ginger and candied fruits which complement the grain whiskey’s floral character that gently lingers in the background allowing the rum influences to shine through, adding vanilla, tobacco leaf and cacao nibs.

Taste:

Luscious and sweet at first with notes of chocolate dipped honeycomb, orange zest, and mango. Spices of cinnamon and nutmeg with dustings of white pepper add a mild intensity, working in balance with the herbal and earthy qualities creating further complexity. The grain whiskey’s soft and elegant presence brings additional zest and vibrancy from the many years of ageing in the rum-seasoned casks while the pot still-driven fruits and sweetness have been further amplified.

Taste: Herbal at first, with notes of fresh peppermint and sage, weaving amongst the succulent orchard fruits and zesty orange. The oak’s subtle tannins complement the chocolate-dipped honeycomb and sweet vanilla, adding to the luscious, silken texture synonymous with Midleton’s pot still and grain whiskeys. Elevated wood spices continue to evolve adding further complexity to this intricate whiskey.

Finish: Exquisitely long finish where the fruits and spices are enveloped by the enchanting nature of the toasted wood, showcasing a harmonious balance between Irish whiskey and French oak.

INTRODUCING REDBREAST TAWNY PORT CASK EDITION Eagerly awaited second limited-edition release in Redbreast Irish Whiskey’s award winning Iberian Series is unveiled

Redbreast Irish Whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers at its world-renowned Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork, Ireland, has introduced Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition, a limited-edition single pot still Irish whiskey finished in tawny port casks from Portugal’s breath-taking Douro Valley.
Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition marks the third release of the brand’s acclaimed Iberian Series. The series is inspired by Redbreast’s long standing connection to some of the Iberian Peninsula’s most celebrated cooperages and winemakers, combining the craft and rich heritage of the region with the excellence of Midleton Distillery’s single pot still whiskeys to create expressions that are truly extraordinary. Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition is the second limited edition to join the series, following the 2021 release of Redbreast Pedro Ximénez Edition, and permanent expression and series anchor, Redbreast Lustau Edition.

Expertly created by esteemed Master Blender Billy Leighton and Blender Dave McCabe, Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition is a single pot still Irish whiskey initially matured in a combination of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. To add a new dimension to the flavour profile, a portion of these maturing whiskeys were re-casked into tawny port casks for a number of years. All of the whiskeys were then skilfully blended and completed their maturation journey by marrying in freshly seasoned tawny port hogsheads for a final maturation period of 14-25 months.

The resulting Irish whiskey combines notes of praline, buttery baked goods and dried cherries from the earlier tawny port influence, followed by a warming sweetness of toasted caramel and vanilla carried through from the bourbon and an added depth of dried fruits from the sherry. The final maturation period in newly procured tawny port casks elevates the nutty character further and provides a sweet finish for a rich, full-bodied whiskey.
The inspiration for Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition started over 12 years ago, when Leighton took a trip to the Douro Valley in Portugal to visit some of Midleton Distillery’s partner cooperages and winemakers.

Reflecting on the trip, Leighton shares: “Enjoying lunch with the late renowned winemaker Joaquim Anacleto and Gesprove Winemaker José Pinheiro overlooking the valley, we were discussing the various wines and spirits that had influenced our whiskeys over the years and tawny port came up in conversation. Having worked with Ruby Port previously, we pondered the differences tawny port holds and subsequently the intriguing flavour profile that it could add to our whiskeys. Since then, we have been ageing single pot still whiskey in a small number of tawny port casks we receive annually from this beautiful sun drenched valley and, needless to say, we have been delighted with the results.”

Blender, Dave McCabe adds: “The combination of ageing some of the liquid in tawny port casks for a longer period, and re-casking all of the whiskey in tawny port hogsheads for its final maturation is what makes this expression so special. The flavour profile of Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition is in keeping with the recognisable Redbreast family DNA, yet provides an exciting twist from another part of the Iberian Peninsula. And each subsequent expression in the series will represent a new discovery from this rich region, which to date has greatly influenced the Redbreast style over the course of its history.”

Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Edition is bottled at 46% and will be available from 18 September in the USA, Ireland, UK, China, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Global Travel and online at the RRP of €100, £79, $100.

Tasting Notes:

Aroma:

Sweet and warming confectionery notes of buttered pastry accompanied by aromas of caramelised almonds with subtle undertones of praline and dried cherry. Taste: Rich and nutty at first with notes of chocolate coated hazelnut and salted caramel, quickly followed with fresh plums and dried fig.  The tannins’ soft presence works in harmony with the luscious and creamy texture, evoking notes of orange marmalade with delicate hints of toasted oak.

Finish: Lingering finish which sees the pot still spices and fruits slowly fading, leaving the tawny seasoned oak to have the last word.

INTRODUCING THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE POWERS IRISH WHISKEY FAMILY:POWERS JOHN’S LANE CASK STRENGTH

Proudly honouring the history of Powers Irish Whiskey, Irish Distillers is excited to announce a new, permanent expression to the Powers family, Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength. Launching 12 years after the introduction of Powers John’s Lane whiskey, this twelve-year-old cask strength edition will be batch-released each year. A celebration of the 18th and 19th century heritage of John’s Lane Distillery when Powers whiskey was sold straight from the barrel at cask strength, the higher abv, 57.8% in the initial 2023 release, amplifies the much loved full bodied character of the original, reaching new flavour heights.

Born from the same meticulous attention to detail that created Powers John’s Lane whiskey, the distillers at Midleton Distillery in Cork have crafted Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength, a highly anticipated release. Characterised by soft pot still spices that are integral to the flavour profile of the Powers brand, the intensity in the cask strength edition is magnified to create a wonderfully complex liquid. An initial medley of rich aromatic woodland notes intertwines with worn leather and tobacco, before cocoa, treacle toffee, crushed black peppercorn, and dried herbs assail the senses. Bold pot still spices mingle with creamy vanilla, manuka honey and warming notes of nutmeg on the palate, before a wonderful spice-laden finish of toasted oak coated in a gentle honey sweetness.

Powers Distiller, Eric Ryan comments: “A brand of firsts, Powers whiskey continually challenged the old way of doing things and advocated careful experimentation throughout the years. With a rich heritage that goes back to its establishment in 1791, John’s Lane Distillery’s well-earned reputation is brought back to centre stage with the launch of this new permanent cask strength Powers expression.”

200 bespoke bottles of Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength will be available exclusively at The Palace Bar in Dublin from today to celebrate 200 years since the iconic Dublin bar was first established.

Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength will be available on general release from 2 October in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Dublin Airport and online at MidletonDistilleryCollection.com at RRP €90.

Tasting notes:
Aroma: An intense medley of woodland aromas intertwined with worn leather and tobacco. Layers of charred wood and cocoa meet with concentrated treacle toffee while the pot still spices continue to build towards additional notes of black peppercorn and dried herbs.

Taste: Rich pot still spice facets trailed by creamy vanilla, manuka honey and dried apricot. Additional nutty notes of freshly grated nutmeg work in harmony with the sweet wood-derived elements and bold spice intensity.

Finish: Toasted oak wrapped with honey sweetness that gently recedes, leaving the distillate-led nature of the spirit to endure until the end.

INTRODUCING REDBREAST DREAM CASK PORT TO PORT EDITION

A limited-edition single pot still Irish whiskey with Ruby Port, Bourbon and Tawny Port influence is revealed as the sixth iteration in the Redbreast Dream Cask Series.

Redbreast Irish Whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers at its world-renowned Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork, is excited to announce the release of its highly anticipated sixth edition in the Dream Cask series, Redbreast Dream Cask Port to Port Edition.

Designed and crafted by Master Blender, Billy Leighton, this limited-edition 27-year-old single pot still Irish whiskey is a true masterpiece, bringing an innovative twist to the Redbreast Dream Cask family. Enlisting the support of Blender, Dave McCabe, the pair knew that only the most exceptional aged whiskeys would be capable of creating the perfect sixth expression in the series to preserve the coveted Redbreast Dream Cask legacy and reward loyal Redbreast advocates.

To create this exquisite whiskey, Leighton and McCabe carefully selected two casks from the Midleton inventory. After starting their life separately in bourbon and ruby port casks and ageing for 27 and 28 years respectively, the two exceptional whiskeys were then married together for a final three-month maturation period in two tawny port casks, creating an extraordinary liquid, worthy of carrying the Redbreast Dream Cask name.

Leighton notes: “The two single pot still whiskeys which had been maturing separately were already an outstanding pairing, but the marrying period in the tawny port casks elevated the expression to new heights. The tawny port influence adds notes of baked goods, toasted nuts, and sweet almond, overall making for a complex, full bodied final liquid.”

This unique new release is the first in the series where none of the fortified wine cask influence is derived from a sherry cask. However, the Redbreast DNA still shines through with a strong bourbon influence and the style of ruby port used. Both are then further enhanced by the elegant contribution of the tawny port casks.

Dave McCabe added: “The traditional Redbreast style is mostly associated with the influence of sherry. Saying that, we took inspiration from the popularity of the port cask inclusion in Redbreast 27 Year Old, and decided to push the boundary a little bit further. By using two types of port casks for this year’s Dream Cask, we created a whiskey with a medium spice intensity along with distinctive wine driven characteristics.
We felt a three month finish in the tawny port casks was the optimal time needed, adding new layers of complexity to the whiskey. At the same time, we were conscious of preserving the individual characteristics that these two liquids had gained from their original maturation journeys.”

In March 2023, after an extraordinary journey, the final liquid was bottled, marking the sixth iteration of the series. Standing as a testament to Leighton and McCabe’s dedicated craftsmanship and vast knowledge, Redbreast Dream Cask Port to Port Edition is a captivating, full-bodied Irish whiskey, that provides a complete sensory experience with a complex nose, taste, and finish that any whiskey lover would be thrilled to experience.
Available through an online ballot hosted on Redbreast’s online members’ club The Birdhouse opening on May 22nd at a RRP of €580. A ballot will also be held at Whiskey Live Dublin, where one person per session will have the opportunity to purchase a bottle of Redbreast Dream Cask Port to Port Edition, along with an overnight stay in Castlemartyr Resort for two, transfers to and from Midleton Distillery and a behind the scenes experience at Midleton Distillery with the Redbreast blenders.

Bottled at 56.3% ABV, the casks yielded 870 of the 500ml bottles, each presented in a keepsake book, made from recyclable cardboard, detailing the latest instalment in the Dream Cask journey.

Tasting Notes
Nose: An intense burst of flavour with cassis, stone fruits, and citrus peel to the fore while notes of dried figs and dates along with sweet black cherry slowly tip toe into the medley of flavours. The heavy and medium pot still whiskeys add vibrant and robust aromas of white pepper and clove spice while herbal notes of lemon verbena and thyme weave amongst the nutty praline and baked confectionery that the port seasoning brings to this exquisite whiskey.

Taste: Luscious and textured with medium spice intensity and a balanced oak tannin contribution. Toasted almonds and cacao nibs with a mild earthy character are complemented by the dried fruits and red berry compote. The pot still spices build adding a mild heat of chilli flakes while the influences drawn from the ruby and tawny port continue to provide an abundance of flavour, working in tandem with the toasted European oak.

Finish: Rich and lasting, with the pot still spices the first to slowly fade allowing the wine seasoned oak and fruits to have the final say.

INTRODUCING NEW LIMITED-EDITION GREEN SPOT QUAILS’ GATE IRISH WHISKEY

The third instalment in the Green Spot Wine Geese Series has been unveiled as a limited-edition single pot still Irish whiskey finished in Pinot Noir casks in a partnership with Quails’ Gate winery.

Irish Distillers, makers of Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, has partnered with the Quails’ Gate winery in Canada to introduce the third instalment in the Green Spot Wine Geese Series, Green Spot Quails’ Gate. Joining permanent expressions Green Spot Château Leoville Barton and Green Spot Chateau Montelena, the series is a celebration of Ireland’s historic contribution to the wine world, as tribute to the group of Irish families known as ‘The Wine Geese’ who left Ireland and set up wineries across the globe.

Finished in Pinot Noir casks, Green Spot Quails’ Gate represents two stories of Irish endeavour from the two Irish families who inspired this special edition whiskey. Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey was originally produced exclusively for the Mitchell family, who commenced trading in 1805 in the heart of Dublin. This limited-edition expression reflects the colourful history of the Mitchell’s whiskey bonding business which commenced in 1887, whereby they sent empty wine, sherry and port casks to the local Jameson Distillery to be filled with new single pot still spirit for maturation in the Mitchell’s cellar warehouse. The wine influence added an exciting new dimension to this whiskey already renowned for its excellent quality, and it was at this point that Mitchell & Son developed a reputation for creating some of the finest single pot still Irish whiskey to be found in the Irish capital.

Located on the shore of Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, Canada, Quails’ Gate Winery was founded by the Stewart family in 1908 after Richard Stewart Sr immigrated to Canada from Kildare, Ireland. Today, they produce some of Canada’s most exquisite wines, including their award-winning Family Reserve Pinot Noir.

For whiskey and wine lovers alike, whether a budding enthusiast or a sommelier in the making, Green Spot Quails’ Gate adds a wonderful wine twist on the exceptional single pot still whiskey. Initially matured in American oak and ex-sherry casks, the liquid was then finished for 16 months in Pinot Noir casks to impart a delicate red wine bouquet to the nose, with notes of ripe cherry and juicy raspberries. The residual soft tannins from the pinot noir give a silky sweet texture to the palate with notes of dried cranberries that work in harmony with Green Spot’s signature tastes of red apple, sweet pear, vanilla and nutmeg. The result is a unique and vibrant flavour reminiscent of the shimmering blues of the Okanagan Lake and the green fields of Ireland.

Deirdre O’Carroll, Blender at Irish Distillers, commented on the new release: “Green Spot, with its distinctive blend of green apple, vanilla and toffee flavours, has been a beloved Irish whiskey since the 19th century, thanks to the Mitchell family.”

“Maturing Green Spot Irish Whiskey in the Pinot Noir casks from Quails’ Gate adds a fascinating and delectable assortment of rich red berries from the red wine seasoning that perfectly balances Green Spot’s orchard fruits and toasted wood finish for a flavoursome, complex expression. Whether a whiskey enthusiast or a wine connoisseur – or both – we hope this addition to the Spot family will be cherished by those in Ireland, Canada and everywhere in between.”

Rowan Stewart, the winemaker at Quails’ Gate winery, added: “The partnership between Spot Whiskeys and Quails’ Gate celebrates the best of both worlds: the deep roots of the whiskey tradition and our family tradition of winegrowing. Together, we have created an exciting collaboration that is both complex and memorable, honouring the legacy of both traditions.”

A non-chill filtered release bottled at 46% ABV, Green Spot Quails’ Gate will be released from March 2023 in limited quantities in the US, Canada, Ireland, France, UK and Global Travel Retail at the RRP of €65, $70, £54.

Gold Spot Quails’ Gate Tasting Notes

Nose: Vibrant oak fused with notes of ripe cherry and fresh, juicy raspberry, elevated by the wine seasoning. These aromas are in balance with Green Spot’s signature orchard fruits of apple and sweet pear. The earthy, woodland spices lend themselves to the deep and complex characteristics found interwoven amongst the sweet vanilla and red wine bouquet.

Taste: It begins with a silky and sweet mouthcoating texture, with the wine`s soft tannins gradually showing their presence. Notes of dried cranberries and red apple follow, adding to the ever-expanding array of fruits in this wonderfully complex whiskey. Clove spice and grated nutmeg work in balance with the succulent fruits, seasoned oak and crisp barley.

Finish: The toasted wood and pot still spices gently fade, with the fruits and red wine seasoning taking the final bow.

KILLOWEN BELGROVE RYE
RUM & RAISIN FINISH

THE  FINAL – BONDED INTERNATIONAL SERIES
PART 2 of 2

 ABV: 60.2%

Continuing on with our rye craze and after a most successful launch of our penultimate Belgrove Oat Rum & Raisin last year, we have finally arrived at the final release of the Bonded International Series.

As mentioned before Killowen’s inception had two overlapping influences, the ethos and history exposed by Fionnán O’Connor, the other was a visit to the phenomenal Belgrove Distillery in Tasmania and meeting with its distiller/farmer/scientist and sculptor, Peter Bignell.

Belgrove’s unorthodox methods and willingness to experiment have resulted in a most unique spirit. We have released both Oat & Ryes from this wonderful distillery before, and now both of them have experienced the finish of PX Sherry Casks and our own Dark Rum Cask.

This Irish/Tasmanian connection did not start with Brendan visiting Belgrove or Peter visiting Killowen but with Peter’s knowledge of traditional Irish whiskey methods that where not properly celebrated a decade ago. These methods encompassed the broader use of Oats and Rye but even more significantly the use of malted and unmalted grains, green malt (undried malt for those of us who don’t devour whiskey books) and amazingly up to 80% unmalted grain, relying on massive starch conversion in the mash ton. If you want to hear more about other methods such as forcing green malt through an old meat mincer, smoking malt in an disused industrial tumble dryer, chip pan oil fired flame-fed stills or even for those extra special whiskeys smoked with dried sheep shit from the distillery sheep fed by spent grain in Peter’s own circular ecosystem, then I’ll invite you to do your own extra reading, the rest of this piece is about Killowen’s release.

The release on Thursday 2nd Feburary (4:40pm GMT) is Belgrove Rye finished with our Signature Rum & Raisin Finish,  released in the true Killowen fashion: cask strength, no added colour, integrity bottling, with full label transparency.

The reason for celebrating another micro distillery’s spirit is because we love it. It has connections with Irish whiskey’s rich past and with its contemporary future. Most whiskeys need to be old – very, very few don’t, however, just like Killowen, Belgrove put the effort in at spirit production stage instead of relying on prolonged casking, the sacrifice is quantity but who needs quantity when our game plan, above all else is quality.

NOSE: Initially noses like a big ‘Sherry Bomb’ but then towards the end the sweet mintyness of the rye comes to the fore

PALATE: It’s Belgrove Rye all day, no cask can mask it, but instead only compete, or in this case complement it. The Rum & PX cask work perfectly with the warmness of the rye spice adding to a thick and chewy treat where dark chocolate shines through. Again the Milliard reaction smokiness here is massively welcome.

FINISH: Sweet, drying, long and lovingly warm. The dryness comes across like a creamy pint of stout while the sweetness plays around like mint choc chip ice cream, in the end the pint of stout just about wins over.

Release Date

Products will be released THURSDAY 2nd Feb 2023 4.40pm (GMT) exclusively via the Killowen Website.

RRP: £84.95

POWERS LAUNCHES THE WORLD’S FIRST EVER 100% IRISH RYE WHISKEY

Powers Irish Whiskey is breaking boundaries, unveiling the world’s first 100% Irish rye whiskey. Proudly honouring the pioneering spirit of Powers Irish Whiskey, this ground-breaking release uses 100% Irish rye for the first time ever. The result is Powers Irish Rye, a complex and flavourful Irish whiskey that is set to shake up the increasingly popular rye whiskey category.

Born from trials at Irish Distillers’ renowned Midleton Distillery in Cork, Ireland, Powers Irish Rye balances the trademark earthy, peppery character of rye with the sweet flavour profile imparted from maturation in a full repertoire of American oak – with virgin oak, first fill and refills in the cask mix. The result is a wonderful taste explosion of maraschino cherry, orange peel and toffee banana combining with the earthy taste of candied ginger and spicy character of clove, burned orange and peppermint. The flavours culminate in a satisfyingly long finish, alongside a distinctive prickle of chilli oil that lingers for a time in the company of honey glazed fruits.

The launch of Powers Irish Rye is grounded in the heritage of the whiskey brand, as Carol Quinn, Archivist at Irish Distillers, uncovered. Old mash bills and recipes reveal that Powers experimented with rye over their history, while as the scientific knowledge of distilling expanded throughout the 19th century, they continually strove to innovate with new techniques and processes.  Carol explains further: “Throughout the history of the famous Powers John’s Lane Distillery there was a willingness to challenge the old ways of doing things and experiment with new ideas, from urban farming on the distillery roof in the 1940s, to bottling in-house and the introduction of the world’s first miniature Irish whiskey, the ‘baby Power’. This has fed very much into the DNA of Powers Irish Rye today, both in the use of rye and in the method of distillation.”

Although finding an Irish supplier was a challenge, since commercial rye farming in Ireland had all but disappeared, Powers persevered and commissioned the planting of rye crops exclusively for this Irish whiskey. With a commitment to sustainable farming, the Cooney Furlong Farm in Co. Wexford supply 100% of the rye used in Powers Irish Rye. Located just a short distance from Edermine House, the ancestral home of the Powers family, the farm guarantees ongoing Irish rye supply for this world first release.

Celebrating the launch of Powers Irish Rye, Eric Ryan, Powers Distiller comments: “We attribute the success of this whiskey firstly to the extended team at Midleton Distillery, yet also to the generations of Powers distillers who considered rye grain to be a unique component of their craft. From our commitment to farming a difficult crop, to reduced brewhouse throughput, to longer fermentation times, and considering the exceptional cask profile; if it was only about efficiency, we would never have used rye! But it proved a worthy endeavour. In an interview conducted by Royal Commission on whiskey back in 1908, the Powers ethos was best described by James Talbot Power, ‘At Powers, we are producers of flavours, not of spirits`, and we are proud to continue this Powers legacy in 2023.”

Bottled at 43.2% ABV, Powers Irish Rye will be released from 20th February in the US, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Dublin Airport and online at PowersWhiskey.com, and via The Whisky Exchange in the UK in the coming months at RRP €40.

Pangur Irish Poitín

Killowen Distillery have nurtured many different expressions of poitín since their first days of distilling, unfortunately these beautiful products are too often in short supply. Thankfully Killowen have now created a core product in larger 70cl bottles, most fitting of the current poitín revival.

‘Pangur – The White Cat’ is fun, dynamic, colourful and versatile with flavours spanning from sophisticated whiskey aromas to beautiful mescal notes, this poitín is a fitting response to Ireland’s unique, culinary beverage. As whiskey’s mummy, this is a beverage category we should all be very proud of.
Panugur draws its inspiration from the fun ancient poem ‘Pangur Ban’ written by a man from here, on a remote German island in the 9th Century about his relationship with his little furry friend – we will let you guys enjoy the fun history search.

Pangur is a 50/50 combination of two spirits, one from either side of Carlingford Lough, the combination offers both potstill spice and notes of mescal creating a beautiful spirit perfectly suited for finishing in some well sourced oak in Killowen Distillery.

The three Pangurs we have include:

Bourbon wood rested offers notes of citrus fruit, and similar to mescal a hint of smoke and light earthiness
Stout wood rested offers some of the above but this time with chocolate, creamy and a silky texture
PX wood rested dried fruit notes of fig and raisin layered on top of the afore mentioned citrus.

Just to note: current legislation forbids the mention of the words ‘cask’ or ‘ageing’ in marketing material for our native spirit poitín, something we hope will change in the future.

Pangur is currently being released into the wild this week onwards, just ask any quality local off licenses North or South to get a bottle in stock, it will also be available from our online partners.

RRP: €48.95 & £39.95

Killowen Belgrove Oat Whiskey with a Rum & Raisin Finish.Bonded International Series Part 2 of 2.

Disclosure: As previously stated, this bottle was provided to the me by Killowen Distillery and it was free of charge. Killowen has no input into this review, or any editorial control.

It’s no secret I’m big fan and supporter of Killowen Distillery. When I was lucky enough to be given a sample pack back in July of the Belgrove Oat and Rye, the Oat really stood out to me and and the Rye just behind. Looking at the label most notably, the age statement of the spirit, and how prominent “3 YR OLD” is displayed on the label. With the assumption many have that “older is better”, is not always the case and definitely not here.

The success of the Bonded International Series with Belgrove has now lead to this moment where Brendan Carty has used the popularity of the Signature Rum and Raisin finish which has also down a treat and given us this mashup.

The crossover here started before the the launch of Killowen distillery, one is the influence of whiskey aficionado Fionnán O’Connor and a trip by Brendan Carty to Belgrove Distillery in Tasmania and meeting with Peter Bignell, distiller.

This release is the same as the previous Belgrove Oat mash a mixed mash bill of 80% unmalted grain, ( 70% un-malted oats, 5% un-malted wheat, 5% un-malted barley) and 20% malted grain (10% malted barley and 10% malted rye). It was aged in ex-Tasmanian Pinot Noir Casks & ex-Tasmanian Malt Whisky casks. The spirit was then finished for four months in rum casks and then a further five months in PX sherry casks akin to Killowen’s signature Rum & Raisin finish. It is released in the true Killowen fashion: cask strength, no added colour, integrity bottling, with full label transparency. It comes in at 59.42% ABV. It is limited to 222 bottles.

Nose:  it starts off with a scent of damp wood, orange zest , mince pies raisins, Nutella, almonds and a hint of smoke.

Palate: it starts off creamy, coating the tongue, pepper spice, dark toblerone chocolate with almonds , orange peel, figs , banoffee pie with a hint of smoke,

Finish: mouth coating with creamy feel , smoked dark toblerone chocolate, mince pies and orange peel.

Release date: Friday, 25th November 2022, 5 pm (GMT), exclusively via the Killowen Website.

Price: £84.95, which includes a Black Friday discount

ABOUT MITCHELL & SON

Established in 1805 and still in operation with 6th & 7th generation Mitchell father and son, the Spot Whiskey family of Pot Still Irish Whiskey finds their roots in Mitchell & Son, one of Ireland’s last remaining Wine Merchants and Whiskey Bonders. The Spot Whiskeys date back to 1805 when Jameson’s distillery would sell their spirit to bonders who matured them in wine and fortified wine casks. Mitchell & Son were importing full casks of sherry, port and wine as one of Ireland’s leading wine importers .It was then that Mitchell & Son developed a reputation for creating the “Spot Whiskey” family of whiskey. Originally The Mitchells matured whiskey in casks under the streets of Dublin in underground cellars. The fortified wine casks were filled with Jameson spirit from the old Bow St. Distillery and they were marked with a daub or ‘spot’ of paint which identified how long the barrels would be matured for… Green for 10 years—hence the name Spot Whiskey.

METHOD AND MADNESS LAUNCHES NEW OATS AND MALT IRISH WHISKEY

THE LIMITED-EDITION, SECOND RELEASE FROM IRISH DISTILLERS’ VANGUARD OF INNOVATION, MIDLETON MICRO DISTILLERY.

Irish Distillers, maker of some of the world’s most well-known and successful Irish whiskeys, is proud to introduce its latest expression in innovation with the launch of METHOD AND MADNESS Oats and Malt. Only the second-ever release from the company’s Micro Distillery, Oats and Malt is a limited-edition release that continues to push the boundaries for Irish whiskey.

Oats and Malt has been triple distilled at the Midleton Micro Distillery by Katherine Condon in copper pot stills using the finest Irish oats and malt. Masterfully handcrafted, the second METHOD AND MADNESS release produced in the Micro Distillery, pays tribute to the traditional malt flavours of sweet cereal, green apple and notes of lemon zest, while the inclusion of oats brings new tastes and aromas with notes of marshmallow and fudge along with a sumptuously creamy finish.

Amid the innovative playground that is the Micro Distillery, curiosity took hold as Distiller Katherine Condon began experimenting with a variety of grains and decided on the unique inclusion of oats alongside the traditional malted barley. Through experimentation, trial and error and an unquenchable thirst for an exceptional liquid, the team handcrafted different ratios until they found the perfect mash bill of 60% oats and 40% malt. When Eva joined the Micro Distillery in 2019 she oversaw the maturation of the distillate in ex-bourbon casks, finally settling on a 46% ABV liquid that has a soft texture yet crisp taste.

With the utmost respect for tradition combined with a curiosity for the extraordinary, Katherine Condon comments: “Nearly a year on from the release of METHOD AND MADNESS Rye and Malt, we are extremely proud to introduce the world to the second release from our Micro Distillery in Midleton. The innovations within Irish whiskey continue to play a key role in growing the industry and it is a joy to be a part of that with the work we do at the Micro Distillery.

The Oats and Malt release represents something exciting. By working with traditional malted barley in copper pot stills and combining this with Irish sourced oats, we are honouring our past while pushing forward with innovation. This is an extraordinary Irish whiskey offering that is a first for METHOD AND MADNESS.”

Eva O’Doherty continues: “Being able to challenge normality and push the boundaries of modern Irish whiskey is extremely exciting, but not without its challenges. We had lots of trial and error to ensure we could brew the oats without ending up with too viscous a texture.  It has been a privilege to work on something utterly innovative and to craft a final liquid that is truly exceptional.”

With this release, METHOD AND MADNESS is continuing its mission to further support the resurgence of Irish whiskey, drawing on new techniques, historic yet innovative mash bills and the restless curiosity of its craftspeople. Bottled at 46% ABV, the limited-edition METHOD AND MADNESS Oats and Malt Irish Whiskey will be available from September 30th in Ireland, the UK, Dublin Airport and online at the RRP of €95.

Tasting Notes:

IRISH DISTILLERS AND MITCHELL & SON CELEBRATE THE 135TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MITCHELLS ENTERING WHISKEY BONDING WITH THE UNVEILING OF GOLD SPOT IRISH WHISKEY

he Spot family shines brighter than ever with a limited-edition whiskey honouring the colourful 135-year legacy of wine & spirits merchants, Mitchell & Son

Irish Distillers, makers of some of the world’s most enjoyed whiskeys, together with the Mitchell family are marking 135 years of whiskey bonding among the Mitchell family, one of Ireland’s last remaining wine merchants, by crafting a celebratory vibrant Spot release, Gold Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

This limited-edition expression pays tribute to the colourful history of the Mitchell’s whiskey bonding business which commenced in 1887 when the bonders sent empty wine and fortified wine casks to the local Jameson Distillery, in Bow Street, to be filled with new single pot still spirit for maturation in its underground cellars. Once filled, the fortified wine casks would be marked with a daub or ‘spot’ of coloured paint, to determine the age potential with Blue Spot, Green Spot, Yellow Spot and Red Spot, respectively indicating the 7, 10, 12 and 15 years of the celebrated expression within the Spot range.

The colour gold symbolises quality, prestige, specialness and celebration and so the Mitchells chose this colour to signify their enduring relationship with whiskey bonding over seven generations and 135 years. This special release commemorates the past and nods to the future of whiskey innovation by embodying the unmistakable qualities of single pot still Irish whiskey.

Matured for a minimum of nine years, the expression builds on the foundation of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, typical of the Spot whiskey style, and is married together with a unique proportion of hand selected Bordeaux wine casks and port pipes. The inclusion of port casks – sourced from Irish Distillers’ long-established partners in Portugal’s Douro Valley– is a first for a modern iteration of Spot whiskey.

Working in collaboration with the Mitchells, the team at Midleton Distillery was inspired by archive documents dating back to the late 1800s showing significant quantities of port casks imported into Ireland which, once emptied, would have been used to mature whiskey. The combination of the four different cask types imparts exceptional flavours of vibrant fruits enhanced by delicate oak tannins and wood spices, with the port wine-driven cask inclusion adding an additional layer of complexity and character, alongside a taste of history.

Katherine Condon, Distiller at Irish Distillers, comments: “It has been a privilege and a joy to work with the renowned Mitchell family as they took us on a journey through the rich history of their business, handed down through seven generations.

“Gold Spot truly is a liquid time capsule with the wine-driven casks treading a beautiful balance of tradition and innovation and marking their 135-year history of whiskey bonding in Ireland. We
cherish these opportunities to collaborate with the Mitchell family and look forward to welcoming even more whiskey fans to taste a piece of whiskey history within the Spot family.”

Jonathan Mitchell, Managing Director at Mitchell & Son, adds: “As the oldest family run wine and spirits merchants in Ireland, we’re delighted to continue the legacy of the Spot family, and our family’s historic role in Dublin’s whiskey bonding era.
“It has been fascinating to once again collaborate with Katherine Condon and the talented team at Midleton to celebrate the colourful story of our family business, utilising casks that would have been originally introduced to Irish whiskey in the late 1800s. We’re excited to see what the future holds for this wonderful family of whiskeys.”

NEW RELEASE

THE DALRIADAN PART 2 OF 2

After a very well received Dalradian part 1 / 2, Killowen believes now is the time to release its improvement of the Dalriadan Part 2 / 2. This time the 40%/60% blend has been flipped to 60% not distilled in Ireland & 40% malt distilled in Ireland so a little more Smokey maltiness in the mix for the peat heads. What’s more is that this bottling was finished in PX sherry casks and Killowen’s own rum casks, that’s right, it’s another beloved Rum & Raisin.

The Dalriadan – Part 2 of 2
Blended Malt

Whiskey lovers have always pondered which nation created whiskey, in truth whiskey evolved long before our fixed ideals of nation and kingdoms. Nowhere is this fluidity of place acknowledged more, than the lands surrounding the sea of Moyle. Predating whiskey’s foundations, there was once an ancient Kingdom known as Dalriata, a kingdom long since disappeared yet the fluidity of her peoples remains just as dynamic to this day.

This drop is a celebration of different, but heavily related whiskey traditions and dare we say, when merged, a beautiful fusion is created, both whiskeys originate safely within the boundaries of what was once, a vibrant sea faring nation, so here’s Slánte to the past, or next 1400 years.

Contents of Blend

60% Double distilled Peated Malt, originating in Caol Ila Distillery, aged completely in Ex – Bourbon Hoggs head and 40% 11-year-old Malt from County Antrim, finished for three years in Oloroso Butts.  This blend was also finished 10 months in both PX sherry casks and Killowen Dark Rum.

Killowen thoroughly enjoy bonding and blending, especially when we are able to provide the consumer with full transparency of these whiskeys origins, continuing in the culture of integrity bottlings we have released to date. As usual we make the drinks we want to taste, and thankfully fellow consumers have the same point of view, so here goes our taste notes:

NOSE: Treacle, Fruit Salad Sweets at the start, then with apricot, Lemon and Pineapple coming to the fore, not forgetting the Atlantic turf fire in the background with coconut & Christmas pudding mix before baking.

PALATE: The same as the last time Crumbly Wensleydale, that wensleydale you get with fruit, maybe bits of dried apricot, lemon and figs. Ahh that loving turf note that we all know.

FINISH: This just keeps coming, turf, figs, dates & Christmas pudding. lots of cigar leaf but there seems to be a real lathery texture among that deep peaty smoke with very light citrus notes and even coconut flakes.
